Wavy Hair 101
Who said wavy hair was a breeze? Sure, it may give off an effortless feel, but it takes skill to maintain those luscious waves!
Wavy hair, just like any other hair type, demands special care and attention. If you want to keep your waves in check, the first thing you need to do is understand the nature of your waves.
Whether your waves are fine, medium, or coarse, there are a few problems you could run into:
- Fine waves. If your waves are fine, they’re also likely prone to buildup of grease and oil.
- Loose, gentle curves. If your texture is subtle and soft, you might find yourself battling with waves that feel weighed down.
- Curly-leaning waves. If your waves live on the wild side, dryness and frizz can creep in, just like they do with any curly hair.
Finding the perfect balance is the secret to keeping those waves in check. While there are some aspects of hair care that overlap with curly or straight hair, there are certain elements that are exclusively tailored for you and your wavy locks!
The Dream Routine
Embrace your natural beauty and rock those waves with confidence and style! Here’s our carefully curated wavy hair routine for maintaining healthy waves and living a more sustainable lifestyle.
Perfectly defined waves always start with a great wash day. Grab a gentle shampoo that can remove product build-up without compromising your delicate waves.
We recommend using a cleanser free of harsh chemicals and made up of natural ingredients. Not only are natural formulas friendly to your luscious locks, but also the environment!
Detangling wavy hair calls for a whole different game plan compared to straight hair.
Rule #1: Forget about your hair brush. Using a brush on wavy hair invites dryness, damage, and frizz. No thank you!
Rule #2: Save your detangling for the shower, and only the shower. With your hair fully wet and saturated with conditioner, you’ll be knot-free in a matter of seconds!
Once your hair is lathered up with your favorite sustainable conditioner, take your time and delicately work through any knots and tangles using either your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Remember, be gentle and avoid applying excessive force, as it can lead to breakage.
Ah, the bread and butter for a healthy head of waves! Our favorite conditioning method for wavy hair: Squish to Condish.
- With your hair soaking wet, lean forward, drape your hair in front of you, and apply a generous amount of eco-friendly conditioner. Make sure your hair is fully saturated while being mindful to avoid the roots and scalp. This is a great time to detangle!
- Next, get ready to scrunch (or squish) that conditioner into your hair, working in sections. Don't be alarmed if you hear a “squishing” sound – it means you're on the right track! If possible, allow the conditioner to work its magic and soak in for a few minutes.
- When it's time to rinse out the conditioner, cup some water in your hands, gather a clump of curls, and gently squish the water into your hair. This technique helps open the cuticles and allows the conditioner to deeply penetrate the hair shaft. If you can handle it, opt for cold or cool water for an extra refreshing touch!
And violà! Once you’re finished conditioning, you can plop your hair while it’s still soaking wet, or apply your favorite styling products.
Wavy hair thrives when styled with lightweight products that offer a moderate to strong hold, like mousses or light gels.
Whatever products you decide to go for, be sure to apply them to your soaking wet hair, using the same scrunch method as Squish to Condish. This will ensure that your products are distributed evenly, resulting in well-defined, frizz-free waves.
When it comes to drying freshly washed hair with products, you have two options: air drying or diffusing.
If you have some extra time on your hands and prefer a natural look with minimal volume, go for air drying. If you're in a hurry and want some extra volume, opt for diffusing.
Whichever method you choose, it's essential to begin with a plop (see video above). This approach is designed to give your hair a gentle start as it begins to dry. Say adios to frizz and tangles caused by traditional terry cloth towels – instead, grab a microfiber towel or a plain cotton tee for the plop!.
Last but not least, your wavy hair deserves tender love and protection to avoid frizz, tangles, and any potential damage.
Bid farewell to frizz by embracing the luxurious comfort of a silk pillowcase or wearing a protective bonnet before you hit the hay.
When it comes to straightening or curling your hair, make sure you use a heat protectant that aligns with your sustainability standards. Heat damage is no joke and we want to keep those waves alive and thriving!
